Bhubaneswar, 16 June (H.S.)Amid growing fears of a diarrhoea outbreak, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in coordination with the Food Safety Department launched a series of surprise inspections on Monday targeting food stalls, eateries, and vendors across the city.
The crackdown comes in the wake of isolated diarrhoea cases reported from Niladri Vihar and a residential complex near Ghatikia, prompting concerns over food and water contamination. Officials conducted raids in areas around SUM Hospital, where they seized and destroyed stale fish, expired bread, and visibly spoiled food items being sold by roadside vendors and small restaurants.
During the inspection, a hotel was fined ₹3,000 for storing and preparing stale fish. Several other vendors were either warned or penalised for operating under unhygienic conditions.
To determine the sources of contamination, authorities collected samples of drinking water and raw food materials for laboratory testing. Officials have indicated that inspections will soon be extended to high-footfall locations such as Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Biju Patnaik International Airport, and popular tourist sites.
The operation is part of a broader public health campaign to contain the spread of monsoon-related diseases like diarrhoea and cholera. Officials also issued advisories urging citizens to maintain hygiene and remain cautious while consuming food, especially during the Raja festival when mass feasting and community meals are common.
