Dhaka, June 14 (HS): Prof. Mohammad Yunus, head of the interim government, returned from a four-day trip to London, where he met with Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the BNP, sparking political speculation. Rahman, who has been in exile for 16 years, has pressured the interim government for general elections, and their discussion in London increased expectations for his return to Bangladesh. Key topics included the upcoming elections and government reforms, with a statement indicating elections could occur in early February 2024 or even before Ramadan in 2026, if preparations are on track.
Notably, BNP president Khaleda Zia reportedly supports the timing for elections. Political analysts view the Yunus-Rahman meeting as a potential turning point in Bangladeshi politics, especially as the BNP remains the largest party while the Awami League has restricted election participation. Prof. Yunus also sought to meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who declined due to Awami League concerns. Additionally, Yunus had discussions with figures such as former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and various UK officials during his visit. On June 12, he was awarded the King Charles III Harmony Award in London.
