Major Reshuffle in Bengal Police Amid Allegations of Negligence Following Maheshtala Violence

Kolkata, 14 June (H.S.) – In the wake of recent violence in Maheshtala’s Rabindranagar area, the West Bengal Police Department has announced a significant reshuffle, transferring several key officials. The move, which was formalized through a government notification issued late Friday night, is being widely viewed as a response to alleged lapses in duty by local law enforcement.

Inspector-in-Charge (IC) of Rabindranagar Police Station, Mukul Mian, has been transferred to Darjeeling. Replacing him is Sujan Kumar Roy, currently serving as Circle Inspector in Ratua, Malda. Roy will now take charge of the troubled Rabindranagar police jurisdiction.

In another key change, Maheshtala Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kamaruzzaman Molla has been relieved of his post and reassigned as Assistant Commandant of the 3rd Battalion of the State Armed Police (SAP). His position will be filled by Syed Rezaul Kabir, the former IC of Rajarhat Police Station, who has been appointed as the new SDPO of Maheshtala.

The administrative reshuffle comes just days after violence erupted in the Rabindranagar locality on Wednesday. Angry residents staged a protest outside the police station, set tires ablaze on the streets, pelted stones at law enforcement, and torched a motorcycle. A police vehicle was damaged, and several officers sustained injuries. Additional forces had to be deployed to regain control of the situation.

The opposition had sharply criticized the police in the aftermath of the violence, questioning their preparedness and response. On Thursday, Diamond Harbour Police District Superintendent Rahul Goswami and Additional SP (Zonal) Mithun Kumar De held a press conference stating that no one involved in the violence would be spared. They also emphasized that disciplinary action would be taken against any police personnel found guilty of negligence.

While official sources have described the transfers as part of a routine administrative exercise, the timing and context of the reshuffle suggest it is a corrective measure in response to recent events.
