- If Bangladeshi elements are spreading communalism, then it is the failure of the Chief Minister
Guwahati, 14 June (HS): Congress leader and MP Pradyut Bordoloi has launched a scathing attack on the Assam government and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma over the recent communal incidents in Dhubri. In a press conference held at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati, he said, Any inauspicious power spreading communal tension in Assam will not be tolerated. Such forces should be found and given the harshest punishment. If, as claimed by the Chief Minister and some others, any power from Bangladesh has spread communal poison in places like Dhubri, then it is a direct failure of the state government and the Government of India. It is a matter of shame for the governments.
He also said that if Bangladeshi elements are really behind the acts like putting up posters and throwing beef in Dhubri, then this is the biggest failure of Dr. Sarma as Home Minister. He questioned that when there is such a security system in the state, then how are such incidents happening?
Pradyut Bordoloi alleged that ever since Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has started the politics of religious division, communal incidents have increased in the state. He said,
Organizations associated with BJP have been involved in creating communal tension on occasions like Eid, Durga Puja, many evidences of this have come to light in the past years. The policy adopted by the Chief Minister to divide the Assamese society through two religious sources and to do politics of hatred and violence among them, is the result of which some forces are raising their heads today.
He also reminded the central government, “Just like after the 2002 Gujarat riots, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had told Chief Minister Narendra Modi to ‘fulfill his duties’, we also want to say the same. The only difference is that we do not consider Dr. Sarma a king, he considers himself a king.”
Making a strong comment on the land policy too, Bardolai said that illegal occupation of historical sites related to Assamese identity will not be tolerated. Congress supports action against them, but at the same time strongly opposes the government's attempts to evict tribal residents and give their land to capitalists, especially the Adani Group.
He also discussed in detail the alleged attempts to snatch the lands of tribals in various areas of Kokrajhar, Palasbari, Karbi Anglong, Rabha Hasong and Nagon.
Regarding the opposition alliance, Bardoloi said that Congress is working with like-minded parties, believing in regional identity, to remove the BJP from power in 2026. He said that under the leadership of party president Gaurav Gogoi, work will be done together with all the allies towards the formation of a strong Congress-led government.
