New Delhi, June 11(HS): The trade deal discussions between India and the US are currently stalled. Meetings held in Delhi from June 4 to June 10 involved extensive dialogue, but only some US delegates returned, while discussions with the Indian delegation continue. The US has pushed for the opening of sectors such as agriculture, dairy, medical, and digital services, but India has firmly rejected these demands, insisting on a balanced agreement that considers both nations' interests. Both countries aim to wrap up the deal by July 8 to avoid trade disruptions, especially in light of the tariff policies from the Trump administration, which has paused reciprocal tariffs.

India perceives the dairy and agriculture sectors as sensitive, arguing that opening them up could jeopardize local businesses against foreign competition. Experts believe India’s steadfastness has resulted in a deadlock, with the US stating that a deal isn't feasible without concessions from India. The US is asking for substantial duty reductions on agricultural and dairy imports but offers little in return, particularly regarding access for Indian products to the US market. While both sides express a desire to conclude the agreement quickly, no significant progress has been made on the critical issues, though there are hopes for a resolution ahead of the July 8 deadline.
