30 May (HS): A special court in Barabanki has sentenced a man to life in prison
for kidnapping and raping a 19-year-old woman in 2023. Veena Narayan, Special Judge of the SC-ST
Court, levied a penalty of Rs 80,000 on the guilty Salman. The court
additionally directed that Rs 40,000 from the fine amount be handed to the
survivor as compensation, said government lawyer Kripa Shankar Tiwari on
Friday. In December 2023, police filed a complaint against Salman under IPC
section 366 (kidnapping, abducting, or coercing a lady into marrying) and the
SC/ST Act. Additional charges were added subsequently, including IPC sections
376 (rape), 504 (intentional insult with intent to cause breach of peace), and
406 (criminal breach of trust) and the applicable portions of the Uttar Pradesh
Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. The charging sheet was eventually submitted
in court.
During
the trial, witnesses testified that the accused had mislead the victim by
presenting himself as Sumit while hiding his real identity.
