Prayagraj,
30 May (HS): In a rare and complex surgical feat, doctors at Swaroop Rani Nehru
Hospital, Prayagraj successfully removed a massive 10.3-kilogram filarial
scrotum from a patient suffering from chronic lymphatic filariasis. The patient
had been enduring this debilitating condition for several years, leading to
significant swelling and deformation of the genital region.
The
surgery was led by renowned plastic surgeon and Vice Principal of Motilal Nehru
Medical College, Dr. Mohit Jain, who described the procedure as both
technically and emotionally challenging. “The patient’s genitalia had developed
a rare 'Ram's horn' deformity, which we were able to reconstruct successfully.
More than the weight, the real victory lies in restoring the patient's dignity
and quality of life,” said Dr. Jain.
The
meticulous surgery involved the excision of dense, lymph-laden tissue weighing
over 10 kg. Such cases of Scrotal Elephantiasis, though uncommon, are seen in
tropical regions and often result from prolonged, untreated filariasis.
Supporting
Dr. Jain in this high-stakes operation were Dr. Vinayak Siddharth, Dr. Yasharth
Sharma, and Dr. Shivam Mittal. The anesthesia team was led by Assistant
Professor Dr. Anamika Pandey, whose role was crucial in ensuring patient
stability during the extensive procedure. “This was a rare and high-risk case.
The surgical team showed remarkable coordination and sensitivity throughout the
process,” Dr. Jain added. The patient is currently stable and under
post-operative observation. Doctors are hopeful for a full recovery and a
significant improvement in the patient's physical and psychological well-being.
