Guwahati, 29 May (HS): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Dr. Syed Muminul Aowal alleged that the Congress Party is no longer an all-India organization, but it has become a limited communal group of Bengali Muslims. He said that out of 15 Muslim MLAs of Congress, 14 are of Bengali origin.

Dr. Aowal claimed that Congress has now become a party like the Muslim League, whose ideological direction is decided by Muslim leaders of Bengali origin. He said that since independence, Congress has played a role in settling illegal Muslim infiltrators in Assam and encouraged their infiltration.

He alleged that Congress has been inclined towards Pakistan and Bangladesh. Despite India's victory in the 1971 war, the Congress government of that time did not take tough decisions in protecting national interests. The Congress' Muslim appeasement attitude is clearly evident, especially in the context of the Chicken Neck corridor.

Dr. Aowal also said that the appointment of Gaurav Gogoi as the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) is a result of the influence of this power bloc. He claimed that the coronation of Gaurav Gogoi after the political change in Bangladesh was met with jubilation among Bangladeshis, illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators and Bengali-origin Muslims living in Assam - a worrying sign in itself.

According to Aowal, most of the Muslim MLAs of the Congress were in Delhi in collusion with AIUDF leaders and Rokibul Hussain to remove Bhupen Bora. Eventually, under the patronage of the same Rokibul Hussain - whom Aowal referred to as the mastermind of the rhino killings - Gaurav Gogoi was made the state Congress president.

Dr Aowal quipped that the ideological change in the Congress has now become so profound that Gaurav Gogoi no longer seeks blessings but 'dua' (prayers). This shows the impact of the Muslim League-type base within the Congress.
