Imphal, 28 May (HS): The security apparatus surrounding former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has undergone a significant change. As many as 17 police personnel have been withdrawn from his security detail, leaving a much smaller team of just six officers for his protection.
Now, Biren Singh’s security will comprise three assistant sub-inspectors, one head constable, and two constables. The restructured arrangement follows a decision believed to be driven by the prevailing security policies during the President’s rule.
The development came shortly after Biren Singh visited Raj Bhavan on Tuesday night at the behest of Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. During their meeting, they reportedly discussed the state's continuing unrest and its political ramifications. Reliable sources say that the Governor and the former CM deliberated on several pressing issues concerning the state's fragile situation.
Following this interaction, an order was issued by the Director General of Police (DGP) directing the withdrawal of the additional security personnel. The directive mandates the relieved officers to report back to their parent units immediately.
This downsizing in security is widely seen as a move that reflects the current administrative outlook towards former political figures in a volatile environment.
