Liverpool, May 28 (HS): Following the incident that occurred in Liverpool on Monday, police on Tuesday arrested a 53-year-old British man who had driven his vehicle into a crowd of Liverpool fans celebrating their Premier League championship victory, resulting in 65 injuries.
It is worth noting that a tragic incident took place in the city of Liverpool on Monday during the parade celebrating the football club's Premier League win. A speeding van crashed into the crowd, injuring 65 people, of whom 50 have been hospitalized. The condition of 11 people remains stable.
Police reported on Tuesday that the 53-year-old British driver has been arrested on charges of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence.
Merseyside Police's Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jondrell informed that the accused had evaded a police roadblock and was pursuing an ambulance that was on its way to pick up a patient having a heart attack.
Four children were among those injured. One child was among the four who got trapped under the van. Firefighters lifted the van to rescue them.
Police stated that they are not viewing this incident as a terrorist attack and that there are no other suspects. The identity of the accused has not yet been made public, as names are generally not disclosed in the UK until charges are formally filed.
This incident occurred while players of the Liverpool Football Club were participating in an open bus parade celebrating their victory. After the accident, a wave of mourning swept across the entire city. King Charles III, during a statement on his tour of Canada, said, It is extremely sad that this moment of joy turned into such a tragic incident. I am confident that the collective spirit of Liverpool will give strength and support to all the victims.
Eyewitness Harry Rashid stated that he was present there with his wife and two daughters. He said, We heard some noises at first, as if people were colliding with the hood of the vehicle. Then the vehicle stopped, but shortly after, the driver picked up speed again and kept running over people.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing the van driving into a crowd while throwing one person into the air. After the vehicle stopped, the angry crowd surrounded it and began breaking the windows. However, the driver moved the vehicle forward again, injuring several more people.
According to the police, they immediately confirmed to prevent misinformation that the suspect is a local white individual. Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram provided this information.
This incident is yet another blow to a city that has already endured two major football-related tragedies.
