Nagpur, 27 May (HS): The
Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced the withdrawal
of its only sleeper bus services between Nagpur and Pune, from June 2.
Launched with much fanfare
during Diwali two years ago, the two 30-seater non-AC sleeper buses had become
a preferred mode of transport for passengers seeking an affordable, safe, and
convenient travel option. Departing daily from Ganeshpeth Bus Stand at 3 pm and
6 pm, the buses reached Pune the following morning, while return services ensured
timely arrivals in Nagpur in the morning.
The sleeper
services were particularly popular among economically disadvantaged female
students, who benefited from a 50% concession, reducing the Rs1,800 fare to Rs
900.
Despite their
utility and popularity, MSRTC has cited financial losses as the reason for the withdrawal of the services. “Both buses were running in deficit,” confirmed
Deputy General Manager Shrikant Gabhne, adding that the vehicles will be
reallocated to Western Maharashtra, and replaced on the route with two-by-two
seating buses.
