Jammu, 27 May (H.S.): Leader of Opposition (LoP) in J&K Assembly and BJP general secretary, Sunil Sharma, today announced that the Central Government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, has assured a special package for rebuilding homes damaged in Pakistani shelling.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, Jammu, Sharma said a high-level BJP team visited areas affected by Pakistani shelling, from Hiranagar to Tangdhar, and submitted a detailed report on civilian losses to the Government.
He was accompanied by Dr Narinder Singh, BJP National secretary and MLA; Sham Lal Sharma, BJP vice president and MLA; Advocate RS Pathania, BJP spokesperson and MLA; and Dr Pardeep Mahotra, media incharge of J&K BJP.
Dr Narinder Singh, speaking on the occasion, shared that in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Indian security forces launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6-7. He described it as a carefully executed operation, designed to be non-escalatory and limited to terror targets. Over 100 terrorists were eliminated and nine major terror hideouts were dismantled.
Despite the precision of the operation, he said, the Pakistan Army retaliated with indiscriminate shelling on civilian areas along the border. This resulted in significant loss of life and damage to property, livestock, and agricultural resources.
To assess the damage, a BJP committee constituted by the party’s central leadership visited affected areas including Hiranagar, Suchetgarh, Arnia, RS Pura, Chhamb, Pallanwala, Akhnoor, Rajouri, Nowshera, Poonch, Mendhar, Surankote, Uri and Tangdhar.
Sharma said their report recorded 14 civilian deaths in Poonch, two in Rajouri, and one each in Uri and Nagrota, with more fatalities reported amidst the chaos. The damage included 690 houses in Poonch, 534 in Uri, and an estimated 1,500-2,000 houses overall.
The BJP delegation submitted key demands to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the J&K Lieutenant Governor, including immediate construction of additional bunkers, Government jobs for bereaved families, and enhanced compensation beyond the current Rs 1.2 lakh limit under SDRF norms.
