New Delhi, May 27 (H.S): The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension of the date for filing income tax returns (ITR). The CBDT has increased the final date for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25 and assessment year 2025-26 from July 31, 2025, to now September 15, 2025. This decision was made by the CBDT after a delay in issuing the notification for the ITR form.

The income tax department provided this information in a statement issued on the 'X' post on Tuesday. In the posted statement, it wrote, The CBDT has decided to extend the final date for filing ITR. The CBDT has now decided to extend the due date for filing ITR from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025. This extension allows more time due to the need for ITR form, system development requirements, and significant amendments in TDS credit reflection. It ensures a smooth and more accurate filing experience for everyone. A formal notification will be issued later.

It is important to note that July 31, 2025, is the final date for filing ITR, which applies to most general categories. This includes the majority of salaried employees and all taxpayers who do not require an audit of their accounts. Now, salaried employees will get an additional 46 days to file their income tax returns. If the ITR is not filed by the final date, the taxpayer may face a penalty of up to ₹5,000.
