NEW DELHI, 25 February (H.S.) : In the Saraswati Vihar anti-Sikh riots case during 1984, the court sentenced Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment due to his ill health, above 80 years old.
Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday pronounced its verdict in the Saraswati Vihar case during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. The court sentenced convicted former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment due to his ill health, above 80 years old, and he can’t look after himself. Special judge Kaveri Baweja gave this decision. The court has declared Sajjan Kumar guilty on 12th February itself. CBI and the complainant had demanded the death sentence for Sajjan Kumar.
Earlier, Rouse Avenue Court had reserved its decision on the punishment of convicted former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar. The victim's side had demanded a death sentence for Sajjan Kumar. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, after hearing the arguments of all the parties, had ordered to pronounce the verdict on February 25.
According to the complaint, Sajjan Kumar had instigated the mob to attack, after which the mob burnt alive Sardar Jaswant Singh and Sardar Tarun Deep Singh. The mob also carried out vandalism, looting, and incendiarism in the houses of the victims. On the basis of the affidavit given by the complainant before the investigation commission headed by the then Ranganath Mishra, an FIR was registered in the Saraswati Vihar police station of North District, in which charges were leveled under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
