NEW DELHI, 21 February (H.S.) : Khadur
Sahib MP Amritpal Singh has filed a petition in the High Court for permission
to participate in the Parliament session as he is in jail. Under Article
101(4), the seat can become vacant on absence of 60 days. Amritpal Singh is
facing charges under the National Security Act. He has been detained in
Dibrugarh jail since April 2023. He contested and won the 2024 Lok Sabha
elections from jail. But according to PRS Legislative Research data, so far, his
attendance is only two percent.
Amritpal
has said in his petition that his absence in Parliament is a violation of his
constitutional rights. Jailed radical Sikh preacher and MP from Khadoor Sahib,
Punjab, Amritpal Singh has filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High
Court on Wednesday, demanding to participate in the ongoing session of
Parliament. This pro-Khalistan leader has knocked at the High Court so that he does
not have to lose his seat due to being absent from the parliament for a long
time. Amritpal Singh has said in the petition that due to being in jail, he is
not able to participate in the proceedings of the Parliament and he is being
forced to remain absent. He accused the malicious intention behind this to deprive
his presence of parliamentary proceedings and after his absence of 60 days his
seat should be declared vacant.
