Dhaka, February 21 (HS): Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser of the Interim Government Muhammad Yunus today paid tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement by placing wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar on the occasion of International Mother Language Day and Martyr's Day.
President Shahabuddin reached Shaheed Minar at exactly 11:59 pm on Thursday night and placed wreath as soon as the clock struck 12:01. A public holiday has been declared in Bangladesh today.
According to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, the Vice Chancellor and other officials of Dhaka University met the President on this occasion and congratulated him.
Soon after this, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government Yunus laid wreath at the Shaheed Minar.
Earlier in a message, Yunus said, On the occasion of Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day, I pay tribute to the agitators of all languages of the world including Bengali. Since the year 2000, Bangladesh and UNESCO have been jointly celebrating this day in a befitting manner. This year's UNESCO theme 'Give importance to languages for sustainable development' is appropriate.
He said that the interim government established through the July uprising is continuously working to protect the dignity of the nation and its languages. Work is being done on how to use the Bengali language in information technology. Textbooks in the mother tongue of various ethnic groups are being distributed free of cost.
