New Delhi, 20 February (HS): Preparations are almost complete for the grand and divine swearing-in ceremony of the new government at the Ramlila Maidan in the national capital, Delhi. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Rekha Gupta will take oath as Chief Minister today. The swearing-in ceremony will be held in the afternoon. BJP leader Rekha Gupta will be the fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi. Before him, Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dixit and Atishi have been the Chief Ministers of Delhi.
50-year-old Rekha Gupta defeated Aam Aadmi Party candidate Bandana Kumari by more than 29,000 votes in the Shalimar Bagh seat in the assembly elections. The announcement came after a party meeting on Wednesday evening at the Delhi BJP office in the presence of central supervisors.
She has become a first time MLA. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Rekha Gupta on being elected as the leader of the Legislative Dal.
After the meeting of the Legislative Dal, former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced that Rekha Gupta has been elected as the leader of the Legislative Dal from Amrai. The BJP Parliamentary Board appointed Prasad and National Secretary Omprakash Dhankhar as Central Supervisors.
After being elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature, Rekha Gupta along with Ravi Shankar Prasad, Omprakash Dhankhar and Delhi BJP President Virender Sachdeva and other leaders met Lt. Governor VK Saxena and submitted a claim to form another government.
Lately Lt Governor Saxena said in an 'X' post that he accepted Rekha Gupta's claim and invited her to form the new government. It is noteworthy that the BJP has returned to power in Delhi after 27 years, putting an end to Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party rule.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet aides and Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled states will also participate in the swearing-in ceremony. Around 50,000 people, including some special guests, are expected to take part in the swearing-in ceremony.
More than 25,000 security personnel will be deployed in central, north and New Delhi areas of the capital for the swearing-in ceremony to be held at Ramlila Maidan. Rekha Gupta will now be the second woman Chief Minister of the country after Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee.
Rekha Gupta was born in Haryana. She has been associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. She has also been the President of Delhi University Students Union. He is a law graduate from Delhi University. Senior BJP leaders Pravesh Verma, Vijendra Gupta and Satish Upadhyay proposed the name of Rekha Gupta in the meeting of the legislative party.
All 48 MLAs of the party were present in the meeting.
Rekha Gupta thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi after being elected as the leader of the Legislative Dal. She said that she will work with full sincerity, loyalty and dedication for the welfare, empowerment and holistic development of every citizen of Delhi.
Rekha Gupta said on X, “I am committed to take Delhi to new heights. I express my heartfelt gratitude to all the top leadership for entrusting me with the responsibility of Chief Minister. Your trust and support has given me new energy and new inspiration. Rekha Gupta is also the national vice-president of the BJP Mahila Morcha and a member of the party's national executive.
