Mumbai, February 19 (HS): Ex-Mumbai cricket team captain and veteran all-rounder Milind Rege died on Wednesday due to cardiac arrest. He was 76 years old.

Rege, who was an off-spinning all-rounder, played 52 first-class matches during Mumbai's golden era. He was part of the Mumbai team that won five consecutive Ranji Trophy titles. Although his cricket career was cut short due to heart problems at the age of 20, he lived a brilliant professional life while being associated with the game.

Contribution in administrative role apart from cricket

Rege served cricket not only as a player but also as an administrator and selector. He was the head of Tata Sports Club and Tata Communications Wing. As a selector in Mumbai cricket, he worked to hone many talents. From Sachin Tendulkar to Yashasvi Jaiswal, he recognised the talent of many young players and gave them the opportunity to grow. For the last four years, he was serving as an advisor to the Mumbai Cricket Association.

Close friend of Sunil Gavaskar Milind Rege, who grew up in Mumbai, was counted among the closest friends of cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. But his influence was not limited to Gavaskar alone. He was a source of inspiration and guidance for many Mumbai cricketers and those who competed in corporate cricket. His command over the language, deep understanding of the game and ability to connect with young players were appreciated by all. He also made a name for himself as a television commentator and expert analyst.

Last rites tomorrow in Mumbai

Milind Rege is survived by wife Raj, sons Siddharth and Aditya. His last rites will be performed in Mumbai on Thursday.
