New Delhi, 19 February (HS): Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur is set to get his first experience in county cricket. Thakur, 33, has been signed on a seven-match contract for Essex in the early part of the 2025-26 County Championship season.
Shardul Thakur expressed his excitement about his new journey. He said, I am excited to join Essex this summer. It will bring new challenges and opportunities for me. County cricket has always been a dream for me and I am thrilled to represent the Eagles.
Great performance in domestic cricket for Mumbai
Thakur has been in and out of the Indian team since making his international debut in 2017. He last played for India in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa in 2023. However, at the moment he is in great form in domestic cricket for Mumbai. His bowling as well as his ability to play useful innings in the lower order played an important role in taking Mumbai to the knockouts of the Ranji Trophy.
Essex's Director of Cricket Chris Silverwood said in a statement issued by the club regarding signing Thakur, We were looking for a fast bowler who can also contribute in batting in the lower order. Shardul fits perfectly for this role and we are very happy to have him in our team.
Essex has always had a vision to have depth in batting and an aggressive all-rounder in the lower order. This brief tenure of Thakur will provide him with new opportunities, while Essex will also benefit from his all-rounder abilities.
