Delhi, 18th February (HS): The indifference of the West Bengal government has put the existence of Bandel Cheese, a culinary heritage of more than 500 years, in danger. Only one family continues to produce this special cheese made of cow's milk, as other families have stopped due to financial constraints.
Despite its historical and cultural significance in Hooghly, the state government has shown no interest in saving Bandel Cheese. BJP Rajya Sabha member Shamik Bhattacharya recently raised this issue in Parliament, but the central government stated that no application has been submitted for GI registration of Bandel Cheese. This lack of recognition and support has led to the decline of this unique culinary heritage. While Bengal's Rasgulla has received the GI tag, the origin of chhena making in Bandel remains unknown. It has been mentioned in British government documents and even named as one of the top 12 cheeses in the world by Bloomberg Business magazine. Renowned chefs like Vikas Khanna have also used Bandel cheese in their restaurants, highlighting its appeal and potential.
The state government must take action to protect this precious legacy and give it the recognition it deserves.
