New Delhi, February 18 (HS): The Supreme Court has reprimanded some state governments including Union Territories for not filing status report on the implementation of domestic violence law. The bench headed by Justice BV Nagarathna has imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the states that did not file status report. The court warned the states that did not file status report that if the report is not filed on the next date of hearing, then the fine will be doubled next time. The next hearing of the case will be on March 25.
The states on which the Supreme Court has ordered to impose fine are Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Odisha, Telangana, West Bengal and Assam. Apart from this, Union Territories like Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Lakshadweep have not filed their report.
In December 2024, the Supreme Court had directed all the states and union territories to file a status report on the implementation of the Domestic Violence Act. On January 17, the Supreme Court extended the date for filing the reply till February 14. Despite this, a fine has now been imposed against the states and union territories that did not file the status report.
