New Delhi, 8 December (H.S.): Union Minister for Textiles Giriraj Singh on Monday said that India’s true strength lies in the soil of its villages — nurtured by the craftsmanship, creativity, and enduring legacy of its artisans. He made the remarks while inaugurating the National Handicrafts Week, which aims to boost the rural economy, preserve traditional artistry, empower women, and celebrate India’s rich handcraft heritage.
Singh emphasized that the weeklong celebration is dedicated to honoring India’s artisans, their centuries-old traditions, and the nation’s cultural identity. In a social media post on X, he wrote, “This week celebrates the unparalleled skill of Indian artisans, their timeless traditions, and the cultural essence of our nation. Let us all observe this week as Handmade Bharat and choose handcrafted products for our homes, celebrations, and daily lives.”
Highlighting the contribution of rural women artisans, Singh noted, “Our craftspeople—especially women and those from remote villages—have kept India’s art and culture alive for centuries. Handicrafts are not mere objects; they are living stories of artistry, hard work, and unshakable faith spanning thousands of years.”
Appealing to the public for active participation, the minister urged citizens to “not remain spectators but become participants.” He added, “Let us collectively make National Handicrafts Week a success — support artisans, appreciate their skill, and help elevate this glorious Indian legacy to new heights.”
The initiative also reinforces the government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ mission. The handicrafts sector remains a vital pillar of India’s economy, providing livelihoods to millions, particularly among rural and marginalized communities, while showcasing the nation’s timeless creative spirit.
