Bhubaneswar, 6 December (H.S.) : Expressing deep concern over the increasing incidents of human trafficking and child abuse in Odisha, BJD Chief Whip Pramila Mallik cornered the state government in the Legislative Assembly on Saturday. She demanded clarity on the measures being taken to curb these crimes and urged the Speaker to direct the government to issue a formal statement in the House.
Following her request, Assembly Speaker instructed Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida to present a detailed statement in the Assembly during the ongoing session.
Raising the matter during Zero Hour, Mallik said that human trafficking networks are operating actively across the state, exposing “serious administrative lapses.” She cited a recent case in which a minor girl from Rourkela was allegedly trafficked and sold in Rajasthan, where she was subjected to severe abuse. She questioned what preventive mechanisms and regulations the government has in place to stop such crimes.
Mallik also highlighted an incident in Nilgiri, where a hostel student was reportedly tied with a rope by a teacher, adding that no action has been taken so far. She said such cases raise serious concerns about the safety of women and children in the state.
Demanding urgent intervention, Mallik appealed to the Speaker to direct Deputy CM Pravati Parida to issue a comprehensive statement in the House on the government’s measures to combat human trafficking, ensure women’s safety, and strengthen child protection.
Acting on the request, the Speaker instructed the Deputy CM to table a statement on the matter during the current session.
