President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to confer the prestigious National Handicraft Awards and Shilp Guru Awards upon exemplary artisans on December 9 in New Delhi, celebrating their unparalleled craftsmanship and innovative contributions to the nation’s artistic heritage. This announcement was made by the Ministry of Textiles on Friday, highlighting that the awards will recognise outstanding artisans for the years 2023 and 2024.

The initiative aims to enhance awareness, strengthen livelihoods, and bring due recognition to India’s rich and diverse handicraft legacy. The ceremony will honour craftsmen whose unique skills and creativity have helped preserve and enrich the country’s cultural tapestry.

The event will be graced by Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, along with other dignitaries and artists.This award presentation forms a key part of the National Handicraft Week, observed from December 8 to 14, dedicated to celebrating artisans across India and promoting the cultural significance of handicrafts through a series of programmes nationwide.

Handicrafts remain deeply rooted in centuries-old traditions and constitute the primary livelihood for millions, especially in rural areas, while significantly contributing to India’s export earnings. The Ministry of Textiles remains committed to empowering artisans through skill enhancement and improved market access to ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
