Thiruvananthapuram, 4 Dec (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the possibility of heavy rainfall in several parts of Kerala today, prompting the issuance of a Yellow Alert for Thrissur, Malappuram, and Wayanad districts.
According to the IMD, the weakening of Cyclone Ditwah over the Bay of Bengal has created favourable conditions for the re-establishment of easterly winds over Kerala in the coming days. These winds, combined with existing atmospheric conditions, are likely to trigger isolated heavy rainfall in the alerted districts.
The weather office clarified that “heavy rain” refers to precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Other districts in the state are expected to receive light to moderate showers.
Meteorologists also pointed to the presence of a well-marked low-pressure area over north Tamil Nadu, which is moving westwards and gradually weakening. Additionally, a trough extending up to 1.5 km above sea level—stretching from north Tamil Nadu through Karnataka and northern Kerala to Lakshadweep—is contributing to enhanced rainfall activity across the region.
Officials urged residents, especially in hilly and flood-prone areas, to remain cautious as intermittent heavy spells may occur throughout the day.
