Washington, 4 December (H.S.): US President Donald Trump described recent peace talks between his envoys and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as “very good,” expressing optimism that Putin desires to end the nearly four-year-old Ukraine war despite the absence of a formal agreement. Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, held lengthy negotiations but did not secure a breakthrough.
The US peace proposal reportedly involves Ukraine ceding parts of the eastern Donbas region and committing to not join NATO, a plan met with mixed reactions. While Trump asserted Kyiv was broadly supportive, Moscow rejected key elements, though Kremlin officials maintained Russia's commitment to continued diplomacy despite stern warnings about potential conflict with Europe if hostilities escalate.
President Putin’s recent battlefield successes have strengthened Russia's position, complicating negotiations. The Kremlin said no compromise was reached on territorial disputes and urged ongoing talks. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for firm security guarantees alongside the current window of opportunity for peace, urging global pressure on Moscow to end the war.
