Christchurch, 4 December (H.S.): New Zealand reached a commanding position against West Indies in the first Test at Hagley Oval on the third day, powered by superb centuries from Rachin Ravindra and Tom Latham. At the close of play, the hosts stood at 417 for 4 in their second innings, establishing an imposing lead of 481 runs.

Starting the day at 32 without loss, New Zealand extended their opening partnership to 84 before losing Devon Conway to a stunning deep point catch by Ozhai Shields. Captain Kane Williamson soon followed, dismissed cheaply for 9, leaving New Zealand at 100 for 2 but already with a 164-run lead.Then came a clinical display of batting dominance from Ravindra and Latham, who combined for a massive third-wicket stand worth 279 runs.

Ravindra reached his half-century in just 52 balls, while Latham completed his 14th Test century just before the tea break, with Ravindra unbeaten on 70 at that stage.Post-tea, the duo maintained their aggressive momentum. Ravindra completed his fourth Test century off 107 deliveries. Together, they propelled New Zealand past the 400-run lead mark before Kemar Roach broke the partnership by dismissing Latham for 145.

Ravindra eventually fell for 176 to Shields’ yorker.Despite losing two wickets in the final session, New Zealand added a vital 184 runs to consolidate their hold on the match.
