New Delhi, 4 December (H.S.): Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the central government over the continuous decline in the value of the Indian rupee against the US dollar, holding the government’s policies responsible for the currency’s weakening trend.

Kharge said that the steep depreciation of the rupee clearly indicates that the country’s economic policies are faltering and demanded that the Centre respond to the public about the issue.Speaking to reporters in the Parliament premises, Kharge said, “The falling value of the rupee reflects the poor state of the nation’s economy. The strength of a currency reveals the actual health of a country’s financial condition.”

Later, in a post on social media platform X, the Congress chief wrote, “If the Modi government’s policies were sound, the rupee would not have fallen. The government must answer for this decline.”

According to market data, the rupee weakened sharply by 28 paise in early trade on Thursday, touching an all-time low of ₹90.43 against the US dollar. Economists attribute the fall to persistent foreign fund outflows, a stronger dollar index, and volatility in crude oil prices internationally.

Kharge’s remarks come amid renewed opposition criticism of the government’s handling of the economy, as inflation concerns and a weakening rupee continue to raise questions about macroeconomic stability ahead of the upcoming budget session.
