
New Delhi, 4 December (H.S.): After enduring four consecutive days of decline, the domestic stock market closed with renewed strength on Thursday. Despite opening lower, buying momentum soon took over, pushing the Sensex and Nifty indices into positive territory. Both indices ended the day with modest gains amid volatile intra-day trading.
The Sensex closed 0.19 percent higher, while the Nifty ended 0.18 percent up. Strong buying was observed in IT, realty, automobile, and telecom sectors throughout the day. FMCG, healthcare, oil & gas, public sector enterprises, and the tech index also ended higher. Conversely, consumer durables, power, and industrial sectors faced selling pressure.
The metal, capital goods, and banking indices closed in red.Broader market indices saw mixed trends as well, with the BSE Midcap index dropping 0.19 percent and the Smallcap index falling 0.32 percent.The market surge added nearly ₹5,000 crore to investor wealth, with the market capitalization of BSE-listed companies rising to ₹469.72 lakh crore from ₹469.67 lakh crore on Wednesday.
During the session, active trading involved 4,302 stocks on the BSE, with 1,802 gaining and 2,317 losing ground. On NSE, 2,843 stocks were active—1,206 advanced while 1,637 declined. Among Sensex constituents, 18 out of 30 shares closed higher, while 34 of 50 Nifty stocks ended in the green.The Sensex began the day at 84,987.56, falling 119.25 points initially, but rebounded sharply to hit an intra-day high of 85,487.21, propelled by strong buying.
After some profit-taking, it closed at 85,265.32 with a gain of 158.51 points.Nifty started at 25,981.85, hitting a low of 25,938.95 before rallying to a peak of 26,098.25 around mid-morning. Profit booking later trimmed gains, and it settled at 26,033.75, up 47.75 points.
Top gainers included TCS (+1.55%), SBI Life Insurance (+1.53%), Tech Mahindra (+1.34%), Adani Enterprises (+1.28%), and Infosys (+1.20%). At the other end, Interglobe Aviation (-2.84%), Hindalco Industries (-0.67%), Ethernal (-0.67%), Maruti Suzuki (-0.55%), and Kotak Mahindra (-0.50%) were among the laggards.
