Nadia, 31 December (H.S.): Sabina Yasmin, who has been suffering from severe mental stress since losing her minor daughter in a bomb attack during a victory procession after the Kaliaganj assembly by-election in Nadia district about six months ago, has been hospitalized after overdosing on sleeping pills. She is currently undergoing treatment at Shaktinagar District Hospital, and according to doctors, her condition is stable.
Family members alleged that they were not satisfied with the police's handling of their daughter's murder case, and Sabina Yasmin was under constant mental pressure because all the accused have not yet been arrested. Unable to bear this stress, she took this extreme step.
Notably, the result of the Kaliaganj assembly by-election in Nadia district was declared on June 23 this year. During the victory procession held after the landslide victory of Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed, a bomb was thrown, killing the minor girl, Tamanna. So far, 10 people have been arrested in connection with the incident, but all the accused are still not in police custody. The case is currently pending in court.
Tamanna's family said that due to the police's inaction, they fear whether the culprits will be punished or not. The family apprehends that the accused who have been arrested might be released on bail and attack them again. The family also alleged that they were receiving constant threats from the accused, which caused Tamanna's mother to live in fear and stress.
According to the family, due to this mental pressure, Sabina Yasmin consumed an excessive amount of sleeping pills after dinner on Monday night, which led to her deteriorating health. She was immediately taken to Palashipara Rural Hospital, from where she was later referred to Shaktinagar District Hospital. Tamanna's uncle, Rabiul Sheikh, said, “Since her daughter's death, Sabina had been physically and mentally unwell and was taking medication. Many of the 24 accused are still at large. There is a fear of further attacks after those who were arrested are released on bail. It was due to this fear and stress that she took an overdose of sleeping pills.”
According to the hospital administration, Sabina Yasmin's condition is currently stable, but the family remains concerned about justice and their safety.
