New Delhi, 31 December (H.S.): On the final trading day of the year, the domestic stock market ended on a strong note, giving investors plenty of reason to celebrate. The BSE Sensex surged 762 points during intraday trade before finally closing with substantial gains, while optimism in the broader market led to an overall increase of nearly ₹3.98 lakh crore in investor wealth.

Trading began on an upbeat note as the Sensex opened 118.50 points higher at 84,793.58, and though the morning session saw minor volatility, buying momentum picked up around 10 a.m.

Aggressive buying across major indices propelled both the Sensex and Nifty sharply upward. The Sensex climbed as much as 762.09 points to touch an intraday high of 85,437.17 before settling 545.52 points higher at 85,220.60, up 0.64%.

Similarly, the Nifty 50 opened 32.20 points up at 25,971.05, gathered pace during mid-morning trade, and scaled a high of 26,187.95 — gaining 249.10 points intraday. However, mild profit-taking in the final hour trimmed some gains, and the index closed 190.75 points higher at 26,129.60, marking a 0.74% rise for the day.

Sectoral Rally and Broader Participation

Strong buying interest dominated infrastructure, oil & gas, public sector enterprises, and energy stocks, while metal, auto, banking, realty, capital goods, FMCG, consumer durables, and healthcare sectors also finished in positive territory.

Conversely, IT and technology shares came under marginal selling pressure.In the broader market, bullish sentiment remained strong — the BSE Midcap Index gained 1.01%, and the Smallcap Index advanced 1.19%. On the BSE, 4,374 stocks were actively traded, with 2,799 closing higher, 1,413 declining, and 162 remaining unchanged. At the NSE, 2,881 stocks saw action, of which 2,072 ended in the green and 809 closed in the red.

Investor Wealth and Market Capitalization Surge

With today’s rally, the total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies rose to an estimated ₹475.70 lakh crore, compared with ₹471.72 lakh crore in the previous session — translating to a wealth gain of approximately ₹3.98 lakh crore for investors.

Top Gainers and Losers

Among Sensex constituents, JSW Steel (up 4.79%), Tata Steel (up 2.43%), ONGC (up 2.43%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (up 2.25%), and Reliance Industries (up 1.99%) were the day’s leading gainers. On the other hand, TCS (down 1.25%), Tech Mahindra (down 0.85%), Grasim Industries (down 0.45%), Infosys (down 0.38%), and Bajaj Finance (down 0.25%) featured among the top losers.

As the year closed, Dalal Street ended on a buoyant note, with the day’s gains reflecting renewed investor confidence, strong institutional buying, and positive domestic sentiment heading into 2026.
