Karbi Anglong (Assam), 31 December (HS): In a gruesome incident highlighting the deadly consequences of blind belief, a couple was allegedly burnt alive on suspicion of practising witchcraft in Assam’s Howraghat area, triggering widespread shock and panic across the region, police said on Wednesday.

The victims have been identified as Gardi Birua and his wife Mira Birua. According to preliminary information, a group of people set the couple on fire inside their own house, leading to their horrific deaths. The incident has sent shockwaves through the locality and left residents traumatized.

Sources said the attack stemmed from deep-rooted superstition and rumours prevailing in the area. Upon receiving information, police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. Officials stated that efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the crime.

The incident once again exposes the brutal impact of superstition and witch-hunting practices, which continue to claim innocent lives despite repeated awareness campaigns and legal safeguards.---------
