Kottayam , 30 Dec (H.S.): Senior Kerala Congress leader and former legislator P.M. Mathew passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 75. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Pala, where he had been admitted for complications related to long-standing kidney ailments.

A prominent political figure from Kottayam district, P.M. Mathew represented the Kaduthuruthy Assembly constituency from 1991 to 1996. Known for his organisational skills and strong grassroots connections, he played an influential role in shaping the party’s presence in central Kerala during a crucial phase of its growth.

Mathew had an extensive political and administrative career spanning several decades. He was associated with the Kerala Congress (Joseph faction) in his later years and remained an active participant in party affairs until his health deteriorated. His commitment to public service was reflected in the many key positions he held over the years.

He served as Chairman of Travancore Sugars and Chemicals Limited, Vice-Chairman of the Kerala State Financial Enterprises (KSFE), and as a member of the Kerala University Senate. In addition, he held leadership roles such as President of the Kerala Students Congress (KSC) and Youth Front, and also served as General Secretary of the Kerala Congress, contributing significantly to the party’s organisational framework.

Known for his approachable nature and administrative acumen, Mathew was widely respected across political lines. Leaders from various parties have expressed deep condolences, recalling his dedication to public life and his role in strengthening democratic institutions in the state.

He is survived by family members, relatives, and a wide circle of admirers and political colleagues. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced shortly. His passing marks the end of an era for Kerala Congress politics, particularly in the Kottayam region, where he remained a respected and influential figure for decades.
