New Delhi, 3 December (H.S.): The Delhi High Court issued notice to the central government on a petition challenging the four new labour codes that replaced over 29 existing laws, directing a response within one week with the next hearing on November 10.
A bench led by Chief Justice DK Upadhyay heard arguments from lawyers NA Sebastian and Sunil Kumar, represented by Ravindra S Garia, who contended the codes abolish labour courts in favour of tribunals lacking judicial members and infrastructure, despite implementation without rules or preparation five years after parliamentary passage in 2020.
Garia argued the hasty rollout promotes hire and fire policies detrimental to workers' job security with minimal penalties for violations, prompting the court to question ASG Chetan Sharma on the lack of readiness and seek government instructions.
