WASHINGTON, 25 December (H.S.): President Donald Trump unleashed a scathing pre-Christmas assault on late-night television host Stephen Colbert via Truth Social, branding him a pathetic trainwreck devoid of talent and urging CBS to put him to sleep immediately, amid broader threats to revoke broadcast licenses from networks he deems overly critical.
Just after midnight on Tuesday, December 23, Trump posted on his platform, lambasting Colbert's performance since CBS announced the end of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert after its final season in May 2026.
He claimed Colbert had actually gotten worse post-termination, running on hatred and fumes as a dead man walking, and insisted cancellation was the humanitarian thing to do.
Neither Colbert nor CBS issued an immediate response to the remarks.
Colbert has anchored The Late Show since 2015, consistently topping late-night ratings despite frequent monologues targeting Trump and Republicans.
CBS revealed the sunset decision in July 2025, citing purely financial reasons amid industry declines, coinciding with Paramount's $16 million settlement of Trump's lawsuit over alleged deceptive editing of a Kamala Harris interview on 60 Minutes.
Trump has repeatedly gloated over the move, denying sole responsibility while attributing it to Colbert's purported lack of talent and $50 million annual losses.
Renewed License Revocation ThreatsIn a follow-up post, Trump escalated by questioning broadcast licenses for networks and late-night shows that are almost 100% Negative toward him, MAGA, and the Republican Party, declaring, I say, YES!
This echoes prior warnings, including after ABC's brief suspension of Jimmy Kimmel for comments linking a suspect in conservative activist Charlie Kirk's murder to Trump supporters, and FCC Chairman Brendan Carr's hints at non-independent oversight.
Trump's rhetoric signals an intent to reshape media perceived as biased against conservatives. Triggered by CBS Broadcast SequenceThe posts followed CBS airing a rerun of Colbert's December 8 episode immediately after Trump's hosting of The Kennedy Center Honors, prompting Trump's ire.
Earlier, CBS Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss pulled a 60 Minutes segment on alleged torture at El Salvador's CECOT prison—where Trump deported Venezuelans—deeming it underreported.
Such exchanges underscore ongoing tensions between the administration and late-night comedy.
