New Delhi, 23 December (H.S.): Karnataka has long been a cradle of Indian hockey talent, producing legends such as MP Ganesh, MM Somaiya, AB Subbaiah, Ashish Ballal, and Arjun Halappa, alongside more recent stars like VR Raghunath, SK Uthappa, Nithin Thimmiah, and SV Sunil.

These players, including four who represented India at the 2016 Rio Olympics, have firmly established the state's proud identity in the sport. Now, the responsibility of carrying forward this storied legacy rests on the shoulders of emerging talent PB Sunil. While Karnataka players like Mohammad Rahil, Abhran Sudeva, and HS Mohit continue to strive for spots in the senior core group and national team, Sunil's stellar performance in India's bronze-medal-winning campaign at the recent Men's Junior Hockey World Cup has reignited hopes for the state's hockey future.

Hailing from the small town of Anavatti in Sorab taluk of Shivamogga district, Sunil began his hockey journey at age 10 at his district's sports hostel. For his parents, who work as daily wage laborers in agriculture, this success represents a beacon of hope.Hockey India League OpportunitySunil has been signed by Vedanta Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League for ₹2 lakh.

Acknowledging the league's importance, he stated, “The Junior World Cup was a dream come true, but that's now in the past. My full focus is on delivering strong performances for Kalinga Lancers. The team has an excellent mix of experienced and young players, and this season will offer me tremendous learning opportunities.”

Reflecting on Karnataka's rich hockey heritage, Sunil added, “When I started playing, I knew little about the sport or Karnataka's contributions. But reaching the national level made me realize the responsibility on my shoulders, inspiring me to achieve like our state's past legends.”

As a defender, Sunil is thrilled to share the field with Belgian Olympic gold medalists Arthur van Doren and Alexander Hendrickx. “For a defender, nothing beats learning from the world's best. Arthur and Alex excel in solid defense, game knowledge, and penalty corner defense,” he said.Sunil emphasized that he seeks to learn not just on-field skills but also match preparation, off-field conduct, and mental resilience.

“Spending a month of the Hockey India League so close to an international star is invaluable, and no platform offers better exposure.”

For Sunil, success in hockey transcends sporting glory—it promises economic upliftment for his family. “Our village has just half an acre of land, and life is tough. I'm confident that strong performances will secure me a job. Cash rewards from Hockey India and HIL earnings will definitely improve my family's situation.”

Vedanta Kalinga Lancers will play their opening match against Ranchi Royals on January 4 at 7:30 PM.
