Pyongyang Rallies Global South Against US 'Coercion' in Push for Multipolar Order

PYONGYANG, 21 December (H.S.): North Korea's Foreign Ministry issued a vehement statement on Saturday condemning US-led Western coercion as a violation of UN principles on sovereignty and noninterference, urging allied nations to resist unilateral sanctions for the sake of an equal and multipolar world order.

The declaration demanded the abolition of unilateral coercive measures that obliterate the rights to sovereignty, survival and development, posted prominently on the ministry's website.

The statement highlighted a recent meeting of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the UN—co-founded in 2021 by North Korea alongside China, Russia, and Iran—to observe the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People and against Unilateral Coercive Measures earlier in December.

Participants, including representatives from repressive regimes and developing nations, condemned hostile acts by the U.S. and its allies that undermine the sovereignty, survival and development rights of sovereign states.

The group resolved to firmly oppose and reject illegal and unilateral coercive measures breaching UN Charter tenets like sovereign equality and self-determination.

North Korea has intensified outreach to the Global South—encompassing Africa, Latin America, and Asia—to counter Western sanctions and human rights scrutiny, positioning itself within a China-Russia-led bloc challenging US dominance.

The ministry called on partners to amplify their voices against such pressures, framing them as impediments to socioeconomic progress and UN Sustainable Development Goals.

This rhetoric follows Kim Jong-un's Workers' Party plenary from December 9-11, underscoring Pyongyang's defiance amid escalating nuclear and missile activities.
