New Delhi, 2 December (H.S.): The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has entered into an agreement with Reliance Jio to implement a mobile-based road safety alert system aimed at enhancing highway user safety and improving travel experience across India’s national highways.Under this initiative, travelers will receive real-time alerts via SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority calls when approaching accident-prone zones, fog-affected stretches, areas with stray animals, or routes with emergency diversions.
The system will be gradually integrated with NHAI’s digital platform, including the ‘Rajmarg Yatra’ mobile app and the 1033 emergency helpline, to create a comprehensive safety ecosystem on national highways.According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this automated system will provide early warnings to mobile users in advance, enabling them to make informed driving decisions before reaching potential danger zones.
Initially, the feature will be available for Jio mobile users, with plans to expand it through similar collaborations with other telecom operators in the future.NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav described the move as a significant step toward delivering reliable, real-time information to highway commuters, empowering them to drive more safely.
“This initiative will establish a new benchmark in technology-enabled road safety management,” Yadav said.Reliance Jio President Jyotindra Thacker remarked that the collaboration would leverage Jio’s extensive network to deliver timely safety alerts, making highway travel safer and better informed for millions of commuters. The pilot phase of the project will begin in select regional offices, focusing on identifying high-risk zones and optimizing alert thresholds before its nationwide rollout.
The integration of telecom technology with traffic safety systems marks a major step forward in India’s vision of smart, secure, and connected highways.
