New Delhi, 2 December (H.S.):
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced that he will not participate in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, marking a significant pause in his celebrated IPL journey.Maxwell, who was bought by Punjab Kings for INR 4.2 crore in the 2025 auction, endured a difficult season earlier this year. He managed only 78 runs in nine matches and claimed four wickets before a fractured middle finger forced him to withdraw midway through the tournament.
Since making his IPL debut in 2012, the flamboyant cricketer has delivered several memorable performances. His most successful campaign came in 2014, when he amassed 542 runs. He followed that with 310 runs in 2017, 513 in 2021, 301 in 2022, and 400 in 2023, establishing himself as a dynamic presence in franchise cricket.
Announcing his decision on Instagram on Tuesday, Maxwell wrote that the choice was made after deep reflection. “After many memorable seasons in the IPL, I have decided not to put my name forward for this year’s auction,” his statement read.
“The IPL has given me immense joy and countless experiences that have shaped me both as a player and as a person.”
Expressing gratitude, he added, “Playing alongside world-class cricketers, representing amazing franchises, and performing before passionate Indian fans have been extremely rewarding. The energy of India and the support I’ve received over the years will always stay with me. Thank you all, and hopefully, we’ll meet again soon.”
Maxwell’s announcement has drawn emotional reactions from fans worldwide, many recalling his explosive batting and electric fielding that made him a crowd favourite across IPL seasons.
