New Delhi, 2 December (H.S.):

The Lok Sabha proceedings on the second day of the Winter Session were adjourned until 12 noon following intense uproar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. The disruption took place shortly after the House convened, whereas the Rajya Sabha continued its proceedings uninterrupted.

As soon as the sitting commenced at 11 a.m., opposition MPs erupted in vociferous slogan-shouting against the SIR exercise. Several members crowded near the Speaker’s podium in the Well of the House, chanting slogans such as “Vote chors, gaddi chhod” (vote thieves, quit your seat).

Despite Speaker Om Birla’s repeated appeals for calm and attempts to carry on with Question Hour, the unrest persisted for over 20 minutes.Consequently, the Speaker had no option but to adjourn the House until noon.

Earlier in the morning, opposition leaders had staged a protest for the second consecutive day outside the Makar Dwar of the Parliament premises, demanding immediate discussion on the SIR process.

The opposition accuses the government and Election Commission of using the SIR to disenfranchise core voter groups, a charge strongly denied by the ruling party. The adjournment reflects the growing tensions within Parliament over electoral roll revisions, with opposition parties insisting on urgent debate and the government resisting immediate discussion, calling for legislative business to proceed.

The standoff is expected to continue amid mounting political confrontations in the days ahead.
