
Istanbul, 2 December (H.S.): The European Cricket Association (ECA) has announced plans to launch the Euro T20 Club Champions Trophy in 2026, a prestigious tournament that will bring together national club champions from across the continent in a Twenty20 International (T20I) format. This initiative aims to enhance the competitive landscape of European cricket and elevate the sport’s profile across member nations.
The announcement came during the ECA’s annual meeting in Istanbul, where member countries were invited to submit hosting proposals by January 31, 2026. The final decision on the venue will be made in February. Reflecting global trends, the ECA is also exploring the viability of launching T10 tournaments to help member federations boost financial sustainability, with recommendations slated for presentation in 2026.
Governance reforms were also a key highlight at the congress, with Gabriel Marin of Romania elected the new ECA president. Norway’s Yousuf Gilani assumed the role of first vice president, while France, Austria, and Malta appointed their representatives as vice presidents. The board has expanded to include eleven members, incorporating fresh leadership from Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Jersey, Italy, and Romania.
Strategic planning for the forthcoming four years was finalized, encompassing both men’s and women’s European Championships and emphasizing the under-19 category as a principal development focus. The ECA reiterated its commitment to grassroots growth, community engagement, and using cricket as a tool for education, inclusion, and social cohesion.
President Marin expressed optimism about the future, stating, Our goal is to establish cricket as a successful and sustainable sport within the European sports ecosystem, creating a lasting legacy for generations to come.These developments underscore the rapid growth of cricket in Europe, positioning the continent as an emerging force in global cricketing circles.
