Cupertino, California, 2 December (H.S.): In a significant move to bolster its artificial intelligence capabilities, Apple Inc. announced on Monday the appointment of veteran AI researcher Amar Subramanya as its new Vice President of Artificial Intelligence. Subramanya takes the helm at a pivotal moment for Apple as the company seeks to accelerate innovation in AI and machine learning, areas where it has lagged behind competitors such as Samsung.
Subramanya joins Apple from Microsoft, where he served as Corporate Vice President of AI, and brings to the role an extensive background including a 16-year tenure at Google, where he led engineering efforts for the Gemini assistant. He will oversee key areas including the development of Apple Foundation Models and machine learning research, reporting directly to software chief Craig Federighi. This leadership change comes as Apple delays significant AI enhancements to its voice assistant, Siri, now expected to arrive in 2026, reflecting the company’s cautious yet strategic approach.
Meanwhile, John Giannandrea, the outgoing AI head, will transition to an advisory role until his retirement next spring.Despite being a late entrant to the AI race, Apple’s appointment of Subramanya signals renewed vigor to compete aggressively in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence—an area critical to the future of consumer technology. This change underscores Apple's commitment to integrating cutting-edge AI across its product lines and regaining momentum in a market that values speed, innovation, and responsive technology development.
