Amid continuing unrest in Bangladesh following the death of mass movement leader Osman Hadi, incidents of violence, arson, and attacks have been reported from several parts of the country. In a shocking incident, a journalist was shot dead in Khulna on Thursday night, while a veterinarian sustained critical injuries.
The deceased journalist has been identified as Imdadul Haque Milon. He was the president of the Sholua Press Club and was associated with the online news portal Khulna Bartaman Samay. The injured veterinarian has been identified as Debashish Biswas.
According to police, the incident occurred around 9:30 pm in the Sholua Bazar area under the Aranghata police station. Aranghata Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahjahan Ahmed said that Imdadul Haque Milon and Debashish Biswas were sitting at a tea stall when miscreants opened fire at them, firing multiple rounds.
Both victims were rushed in critical condition to Khulna Medical College and Hospital. Doctors declared Imdadul Haque Milon dead on arrival, while Debashish Biswas has been admitted to the surgery department, where his condition remains critical.
Local residents said Imdadul Haque Milon was known as an active journalist in the area. Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the motive behind the attack. Tension continues to prevail in the locality following the incident.
