Sub-Zero Chill Grips Kashmir As Zojila Plunges To -17°C


Srinagar, 18 December (H.S.): Cold wave conditions continued across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday night with several places in the Kashmir Valley recording sub-zero minimum temperatures, while Zojila Pass remained the coldest spot at a biting minus 17 degrees Celsius.

In the Kashmir region, Awantipora recorded the lowest minimum temperature at minus 3.8°C, followed by Pulwama at minus 3.2°C, Pampore and Baramulla at minus 1.8°C each, and Shopian at minus 1.5°C. Srinagar city recorded a low of 0.2°C, while the Srinagar Airport settled at the freezing point. Kupwara saw a minimum of minus 1.0°C, Anantnag minus 0.3°C, Budgam and Bandipora minus 0.8°C each, and Ganderbal minus 0.1°C. Tourist destinations Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded 0.4°C and 1.6°C respectively, while Sonamarg stood at 2.1°C. Kulgam recorded a minimum of 2.0°C, Kokernag 1.8°C, and Qazigund 0.8°C. Zethan Rafiabad station was reported non-functional.

In the Jammu region, temperatures remained comparatively higher, with Jammu city recording 11.0°C and Jammu Airport 11.5°C. Katra recorded 12.1°C, Banihal 5.7°C, Batote 9.5°C, Bhaderwah 5.0°C, Kathua 8.8°C, Udhampur 6.1°C, Ramban 8.3°C, Samba 7.1°C, Rajouri 3.0°C, Kishtwar 8.6°C, Reasi 9.7°C and Doda 8.8°C.

In Ladakh, Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.4°C, while data for Kargil and Nubra Valley was not available.
