
Chennai, 18 December (H.S.) : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has formally written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing grave concern over the escalating crisis in the state’s export sectors. The Chief Minister highlighted that the punitive 50 percent tariffs imposed by the United States have crippled vital industries, including textiles, apparel, leather, and footwear.

. It is also noted that these sectors form the backbone of the state's economy and provide livelihoods to millions, particularly women. The letter emphasizes that the current trade stalemate is fast becoming a humanitarian challenge due to the risk of large-scale layoffs and economic instability across several industrial clusters.
According to the Chief Minister on x, The knitwear capital of Tiruppur has already witnessed a staggering wipeout of 15,000 crore rupees in confirmed orders. Furthermore, daily revenue losses for exporters in Coimbatore, Erode, Karur, and Tiruppur have reached 60 crore rupees.
Stalin reported that production cuts of up to 30 percent have been enforced, pushing many small and medium enterprises to the brink of collapse. He warned that international buyers are rapidly shifting their orders to competitors like Vietnam and Bangladesh, which could lead to a permanent loss of market share for Indian manufacturers.
In his official statement, the Chief Minister implored the Prime Minister to prioritize a bilateral agreement with the United States to resolve the tariff issue. He asserted that a swift diplomatic intervention is necessary to revive the fortunes of exporters and reinforce India’s standing as a reliable manufacturing hub.
Stalin also criticized the Union government for failing to provide adequate disaster relief funds to the state, noting that only 4,136 crore rupees have been released against a demand of 24,679 crore rupees.
The Chief Minister concluded by expressing confidence that the Prime Minister would take urgent steps to protect domestic industries and secure the jobs of workers.
