Australia suffered a major setback ahead of the third Ashes Test as star batter Steve Smith was ruled out due to vertigo-like symptoms. The decision came just hours before the toss after Smith complained of dizziness and nausea, prompting a last-minute change to the team lineup.

Usman Khawaja has been recalled to the playing XI in Smith’s absence.Cricket Australia confirmed shortly before play that Smith had been feeling unwell for several days. He missed Monday’s training session and, despite returning to the nets the following day, appeared far from full fitness. During practice, he also sustained a minor groin injury, which further limited his preparation.

A Cricket Australia spokesperson said, “Steve Smith has been experiencing symptoms of nausea and dizziness over the past few days. He was closely monitored and came very close to being cleared to play, but with symptoms persisting, the medical team decided to rest him. He is currently being treated for a potential vestibular problem, a recurring issue that has affected him in the past. We expect him to recover in time for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.”

After winning the toss, captain Pat Cummins confirmed Smith’s absence and expressed confidence in the returning Khawaja. Cummins, back at the helm after missing the first two Tests, revealed that Smith had undergone a fitness test on match morning but failed to fully recover and was sent home.

Cummins stated, “Steve hasn’t been feeling great for a few days. He tried hard this morning but didn’t feel ready to play. Fortunately, we have someone like Usman Khawaja — a proven performer — who can step in right away. Khawaja will bat at number four.”

With Smith resting and Khawaja reinstated, Australia will rely on the veteran opener to bring stability and experience to their middle order in the crucial Adelaide Test.
