Frankfort, Kentucky, 10 December (H.S.): A shooting at Kentucky State University on Tuesday left one person dead and another critically injured, prompting a campus-wide lockdown before police apprehended a suspect, authorities confirmed.

Police in Frankfort, the capital of Kentucky, responded to reports of gunfire in the early evening. The campus, located just two miles east of the State Capitol, was immediately sealed off as officers conducted building-to-building searches. Footage broadcast by WLKY-TV in Louisville showed multiple police vehicles parked near student dormitories, with crime scene tape cordoning off the courtyard.

The exact location and motive behind the shooting remain unclear as of Tuesday night. In a statement, Frankfort police described the episode as an “active aggressor situation” but said the area was later secured and that an investigation was underway.

Governor Andy Beshear acknowledged the incident on social media, confirming that law enforcement had detained a suspect. “We will share more information as it becomes available,” he said in a post on X, urging citizens to “pray for the victims and their families.

”Kentucky State University, a historically Black public institution founded in 1886, has an enrolment of around 2,200 students. Local officials said classes and campus activities would remain suspended pending further updates on the investigation.

Authorities are expected to hold a press conference later in the day to release more details about the victims and the suspected shooter.
