New Delhi, 1 December (H.S.): Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan clarified in the Lok Sabha on Monday that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution has not been removed from school science curricula. He emphasized that science education follows a continuous progression from middle to secondary levels, with Darwin's foundational principles retaining their place in the curriculum.
Responding to a starred question from DMK MP Dr. Kalanidhi Veeraswamy, Pradhan explained that suggestions to reduce curriculum load came from multiple stakeholders—including the Parliamentary Standing Committee, CBSE, and experts from colleges and universities—particularly during and after the COVID-19 period. Based on these multi-level inputs, the NCERT rationalized textbooks to alleviate burden on students and teachers, following extensive expert consultations.
The minister acknowledged concerns raised by the scientific community, academics, and civil society regarding the rationalization process. He reiterated that the exercise aimed solely at lightening academic loads without compromising core scientific content.
Veeraswamy had specifically inquired whether the government had excised Darwin's theory of evolution from the Class 10 science curriculum as part of this rationalization effort. Pradhan's response affirmed its continued inclusion across relevant stages of school education.
