WASHINGTON, 5 November (H.S.): President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday his nomination of Jared Isaacman, a private astronaut and ally of billionaire Elon Musk, to serve as the next administrator of NASA. The nomination comes after Isaacman was previously considered for the role but was sidelined following a public disagreement between Trump and Musk.

This evening, I am pleased to nominate Jared Isaacman, an accomplished business leader, philanthropist, pilot, and astronaut, as Administrator of NASA, Trump stated on social media.

The position requires confirmation by the Senate, where the Republican Party holds a majority.Isaacman, a billionaire who founded the payment processing company Shift4 Payments as a teenager, gained prominence as the commander of the first all-civilian space mission in 2021 aboard a SpaceX capsule. His initial consideration for the NASA leadership post came at the recommendation of Musk, who was an influential advisor to the president and sought to align the U.S. space program with his ambitions for missions to Mars.

In his announcement, Trump praised Isaacman's credentials, stating, Jared's passion for Space, astronaut experience, and dedication to pushing the boundaries of exploration, unlocking the mysteries of the universe, and advancing the new Space economy, make him ideally suited to lead NASA into a bold new Era.

During a period of vacancy, the role of acting NASA chief was filled by Sean Duffy, the head of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
