Chennai, 3 November (H.S.) : A tragic and shocking incident was reported in Coimbatore where a 20-year-old private college student was allegedly sexually assaulted by three unidentified men near the Coimbatore International Airport late on Sunday, November 2. The Coimbatore Commissionerate has confirmed that the incident was a case of gangrape and a detailed investigation is currently underway.

The incident reportedly took place around 11 p.m. behind the airport area near Brindavan Nagar–SIHS Colony Road. The survivor, an MBA student, was speaking with her male friend inside a car when the attack occurred. According to police reports, three unidentified men, who were allegedly traveling on a stolen bike, broke a car window with a stone and forced the door open. The assailants reportedly assaulted the male friend, who sustained serious injuries, before abducting the woman.

The friend, after alerting authorities, was instrumental in initiating the police search operation. Following the search, the Peelamedu police located the survivor and immediately rushed her to a private hospital for treatment. Her male friend is currently receiving treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The police have formed seven special teams to trace and arrest the three suspects and are working to ascertain their identities and establish the full sequence of events.

Reacting to the incident, former Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president K. Annamalai took to social media to allege that crimes against women have been on the rise under the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government.

He claimed that the continuing crimes clearly show that anti-social elements have no fear of the law or the police and that there was a disturbing trend of protecting offenders, ultimately holding the government responsible for failing to ensure women's safety.
